U.S. stocks close higher, Dow Industrials set new record

NEW YORK
U.S. stocks rose Wednesday with the Dow Jones Industrial Average
stretching to a fresh record close after surprising strength in a
regional survey eased economic worries, with further help from Altria
Group Inc. and Boeing Co. and news of a possible merger in the airline
sector.

Japan's meteorological agency issued a tsunami warning and told Pacific
coast residents to flee to higher ground after an earthquake with a
preliminary magnitude of 8.1 hit near islands north of the country.

stormed through an Iraqi Education Ministry building and kidnapped
scores of workers. Hours later, the government said five senior police
officers had been arrested.

LIRR alert: Montauk branch suspended

The Long Island Rail Road says the Montauk branch is temporarily
suspended in both directions between Babylon and Patchogue due to a
train striking a pedestrian, just east of Bayport Avenue. Passengers are
being told to use either the Ronkonkoma or Babylon branches.

Suicide Bomber Kills 35 In Baghdad

A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a police recruiting center in
Baghdad Sunday, killing at least 35 people and wounding 56. Meanwhile,
police were searching for gunmen who killed 10 Shiite travelers and
kidnapped about 50 others.

U.S. Vetoes U.N. Gaza Resolution

The United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council draft resolution that
sought to condemn an Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip and
demand Israeli troops pull out of the territory. The U.S. Ambassador
said it was "biased against Israel."
