After a 13-year-old girl had her feet chopped off at the ankle on a
Superman Tower of Power in Kentucky, Six Flags and another company shut
down eight more thrill rides around the country, including a ride at a
North Carolina amusement park.

The military has announced the deaths of 14 U.S. troops in Iraq,
including five killed by a roadside bomb blast. The casualties came
during operations today and yesterday. Also, a blast at a town hall in
northern Iraq has killed 13 Iraqis.

The deadliest insurgent attack since the U.S.-led invasion of
Afghanistan in 2001 destroyed a bus full of police instructors at a
Kabul transit hub. The enormous blast, which raised the specter of
Iraq-style bombings, killed 35 people and wounded 52.
