Army Desertion Rate Soaring
American soldiers are deserting their posts at the highest rate since
1980, Army statistics show. The Army's desertion rate has risen 80
percent since the invasion of Iraq four years ago and 42 percent since
last year.

pay enough to cover their bills. The number of people fighting hunger is

Major earthquake strikes northern Chile
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - A major earthquake struck northern Chile on
Wednesday. There were no immediate reports from the region, but it was
felt strongly in the capital, 780 miles to the south. The U.S.
Geological Survey calculated the quake's magnitude at 7.7.

Forces loyal to the Gaza Strip's Islamic militant Hamas rulers opened
fire at the rival Fatah group's mass rally commemorating the late
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. One civilian was killed and at least
31 people were wounded, witnesses said.
