1980, Army statistics show. The Army's desertion rate has risen 80
percent since the invasion of Iraq four years ago and 42 percent since
last year.

CDC warns of possibly fatal respiratory bug

A mutated version of a common cold virus has killed 10 people in the
last 18 months, U.S. health officials said Thursday.

The Agriculture Department says over 12 percent of the people in the
United States went hungry in 2006 as they struggled to find jobs that
pay enough to cover their bills. The number of people fighting hunger is
about the same as the previous year.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - A major earthquake struck northern Chile on
Wednesday. There were no immediate reports from the region, but it was
felt strongly in the capital, 780 miles to the south. The U.S.
Geological Survey calculated the quake's magnitude at 7.7.

Forces loyal to the Gaza Strip's Islamic militant Hamas rulers opened
fire at the rival Fatah group's mass rally commemorating the late
